In today’s class, Ms. Tucker showed a clip from an Anne Frank adaptation. Students were able to see what the characters looked like and how Anne’s life was before the war. Afterwards, students worked in groups on their skits of scenes from “DIARY.” Their task was to revise the script, making it easier to read and enhancing or deleting some lines while being sure to be true to the original spirit of the play. Once the revisions of the scripts are completed, these groups will begin rehearsing their skits.

Today was a work day for our 4th Quarter book critique. Some students were prepared to meet with me with their drafts, while others were either writing their drafts or finishing their books.  We will have another work day on Monday.

Homework: First, be ready with a draft of your book critique on Monday.  Ms. Tucker will meet with as many students as possible in class on Monday. The final book critique is due in class on Tuesday.

Second, read and highlight chapters 9 and 10 in Roll of Thunder.  This reading assignment is due on Tuesday, May 15th, so make sure to split it into “doable” chunks of pages.

Today students took a quiz and chapters 7 and 8 in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.  Afterwards, Ms. Tucker handed out progress reports so that students and parents will be well aware of where they stand in terms of their English grade – remember there are only 15 days left of school, so you need to keep focused to either maintain or improve your grade.  Students started presenting their vocabulary words.  It was fun to see not only talented artists but also creative ways of showing both sides of the world in 1933 Mississippi.

Homework: Have a great Fine Arts Night!  Also, please be prepared to work on your 4th Quarter book critique in class tomorrow.  If you need to finish reading then bring your book – if you are ready to start writing then charge your laptop! Finally, PLEASE GET MOM OR DAD TO SIGN YOUR PROGRESS REPORT!!

**Read and highlight chapters 9 and 10 in Roll of Thunder.  This reading assignment is due on Tuesday, May 15th, so make sure to split it into “doable” chunks of pages.

In today’s class, students worked in groups on their skits of scenes from “DIARY.” Yesterday, they decided that everyone in each group should take a leadership role: director, script supervisor, prop master, costumer and set designer. Once this was decided, they started revising the script, making it easier to read and enhancing or deleting some lines while being sure to be true to the original spirit of the play. When the revision of the scripts is completed in tomorrow’s class, these groups will begin to rehearse their skits.

Homework:
* IF YOU ARE INVOLVED IN TONIGHT’S FINE ARTS CONCERT, YOU MAY NOT HAVE TIME TO COMPLETE 30 MINUTES OF ENGLISH HOMEWORK TONIGHT. HOWEVER, DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO WORK ON YOUR IR SCRIPT, WHICH IS DUE ON MONDAY, 5/14.

Extra-Credit Assignment!
Begin writing your own diary/journal on Wednesday, 4/18. Spend approximately 15-20 minutes on each entry. Students who write thorough entries every day until we finish the play will earn an extra point on their 4th quarter average!

In today’s class, students chose their best Summary & Response paragraphs from the Scenes of “DIARY” to be graded. Then sixth graders were placed in small groups to begin work on acting out skits from the play. After choosing scenes and jobs, Ms. Tucker showed everyone how to create the script. Each group will rewrite the script, maintaining the spirit of the play, but leaving out italicized directions while adding to the lines to insure that the skits are entertaining.

Homework: Work on your IR Puppet Show script and puppet.

Today students worked on their vocabulary pictures.  In keeping with the theme of discrimination in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, students worked in pairs to draw both perspectives of the word – the white perspective and the black perspective. We will present the words in class tomorrow after the quiz.

Homework: Read and highlight chapter 8 in Roll of Thunder.  Check the study questions on the blog – I PROMISE to use them to make the quiz.  We will not discuss anything before the quiz as I want to make sure that everyone has read on their own.

Good morning!  I know that I am not there in body, but I am there in spirit.  This is just a gentle reminder to be good, get a lot of reading done and DON’T FORGET to study your old quiz on chapters 1-4…the new improved quiz has the same information just in a different format.  You will also have questions from chapters 5 and 6.

Homework:  Make sure to prepare for the quiz on Monday, plus, if you get a chance to read ahead in Roll of Thunder please do so…it is going to be a BIG reading week next week. You want to finish your 4th quarter IR book as well if possible!  Lots to do!! :)

Today we went over the quiz on chapters 1-4 in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.  Since many of the grades were not as high as people would like, we are going to take another quiz on Monday, May 7th, which will include information that we reviewed on chapters 1-4 as well as information from chapters 5 and 6.  Students MUST read and highlight their texts while in an ACADEMIC setting…reading right before you go to bed when the book falls on your face because you are so tired is not a good way to absorb what you are reading.

Homework:  Read the second half of chapter 6 in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.  (pg.131 – 139) Also, tomorrow is a SOAR day so prepared to kick back and read.  You may finish reading Roll of Thunder first and then move to your independent reading.  It is your choice!

Today students turn in the written portion of their persuasive essay.  They also took a quiz on chapters 1-4 in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.  They also had a chance to work on their next reading assignment.

Homework: Read and highlight chapter 5 in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. There are study questions in the Roll of Thunder page.

In today’s class, after taking a 5-point quiz on Scene 3,students had a chance to work on their homework as Ms. Tucker was home sick.

Since this scene did mention the invasion, here is a little information on D Day. This enormous undertaking involved approximately 150,000 troops. The Allied invasion of Normandy was the turning point of World War II. Within a year of June 6, 1944, Hitler had committed suicide and the war was over.

Homework – due Friday, 5/4:
1) Read & highlight Act II, Scenes 4 & 5, pages 94-101.
2) Prepare for a 10-point quiz on Act II, Scenes 4 & 5, pages 94 – 101.
3) Using your lap top, write a Summary and Response (2 paragraphs) for Act II, Scene 4. The summary can begin with the words, “As the telephone rings constantly, the people in hiding…” The response should begin with the words, “If I were there, …”

A Hint for the Blog Readers:
In Scene 4, be sure to know what Anne does when she “can’t stand being cooped up for one more minute.” In Scene 5, be sure to know where Miep was when the police surrounded the block.

Extra-Credit Assignment!
Begin writing your own diary/journal on Wednesday, 4/18. Spend approximately 15-20 minutes on each entry. Students who write thorough entries every day until we finish the play will earn an extra point on their 4th quarter average!
