“The Midday”

New Characters – the Atkins Family

Adam thinks about God and what he fears more than God.

The Committeemen make a plan.  pg. 133

Cousin Simmons tells Adam that he can turn to him like a father.

A rider comes to the pasture with news about the British in Concord.

Everything that the British were after had been hidden.  pg. 136

They think the British have a plan to blow up the North Bridge.

They ask the rider to help them by riding down the road ahead of the British soldiers shouting an alarm to let the colonists know when the British are near.

Solomon Chandler quotes the Bible and says that the British need to pay.  pg. 138

They separate into two groups – people with rifles and people with muskets.

Ironically, Solomon says to shoot but take no pleasure in it.  pg. 139

The committeemen respect that Redcoats ability to kill.  pg. 142

Adam learns that if you run you can live to tell about it.

Adam gets his initiation into war – the death of the Redcoat – pg. 143

Adam and Cousin Simmons retreat to a pasture to rest.

When they return to the stonewall, they encounter people stealing from a dead Redcoat and Joseph gets mad.  The young Redcoat reminds Adam of his brother, Levi.  pg. 146 – 147.

“The Afternoon”

 New Characters – Mrs. Cartwright, the undertaker

Cousin Simmons tells Adam that things don’t make sense in wartime like they do in peacetime.    pg. 159

Adam learns they need to keep fighting because they declared their purpose.  pg. 159

It will end when the Redcoats are driven back to England.  pg. 160

Adam watched from a hillock as Lexington was on fire.  pg. 162

The men were all very frustrated that all they could do was watch from afar – they could not go into town!

Adam joins a force of men from Watertown and Cambridge along the Menotomy Road.  pg. 163

Adam only shot his fowling piece once and realized that from the distance it would not do anything more than sting a Redcoat.  He was happy not to have to fire.  pg. 166

Adam falls asleep in the middle of the Menotomy Road chaos.

Adam is awakened by the first silence in six or seven hours.

The Reverend and Cousin Simmons think Adam is dead and discuss who will tell Goody Cooper.  pg. 167-168

They head home to Lexington.

Adam sees Levi and hugs him “…as if he was everything in the world.”  pg. 170

Adam’s family is in shock because they thought he was dead.

Adam yells at Mrs. Cartwright because she seems so insensitive.  pg. 172

Adam tells his family that they drove the Redcoats back to Boston.

Adam tells Levi that they will have new responsibilities now that father is dead.

Levi tells Adam what it was like when the Redcoats were burning and looting in Lexington.  pg. 178

Adam consoles his mother and tells her things will be okay.

Adam helps take his father’s coffin to the meetinghouse. pg. 181

Adam sees the destruction on the common.  pg. 181- 182

The undertaker apologizes to Adam about the construction of Moses’s coffin.  pg. 182

The Middlesex committee tries to get the accurate story of the day’s events.

A reporter from the Advertiser in Boston corners Adam about the day’s events.  pg. 183 – 184

Cousin Simmons tries to explain to Adam that even though Moses was a tough man, he still loved his friends and family.

Adam admits that on the common his father put his arm around him, and it was the first time he felt loved.  pg. 185

There will be a new muster book – they need 5,000 men.

Cousin Simmons will stay home – he is a blacksmith.

 

“The Evening”

New Characters – none

Adam remembers the game Pontiac – and realizes that his childhood is now behind him.   pg. 191-192

Adam comes home to all of the people in his house; he notes that all of the food is a tribute to the living.

All of the women circle around Adam and fuss over him.

Mother asks Adam to bring the candles to the meetinghouse.

Ruth sees Adam on his way to the meetinghouse and kisses him!

Ruth says she loves Adam.  pg. 196

Adam admits to hitting a few Redcoats when shooting, but he does not think he killed anyone.

The Reverend reminds Adam that there is a new muster book and that his first duty is to his mother!  pg. 198

Ruth goes with Adam to sit in the meetinghouse and pray for Moses and the other men.

Ruth asks Adam if he loves her…he thinks about it and nods yes.

Granny thinks Adam will go to Boston to fight.

Adam is still not sure if he will go but realizes there is no way out of it.

Adam goes to bed – thanks God that the day is over – and bids a final farewell to his childhood.
