Students continued to prepare for their European essay assignment in class today. Each student will have 10 facts about Bulgaria and 10 facts about another European country to use for the compare and contrast essay that will be written in class next week.
Last night’s homework was to edit third letters to Bulgaria. If you have not yet read over your child’s 3rd letter with him/her, please do so this evening so that we can get those in the mail to our penpals. Hopefully they will be able to open them in class on Friday morning at the American College of Sofia.
HOMEWORK: Please make sure that I have your edited third letter to your penpal. I will send these tonight and you do not want your Bulgarian friend to be the only one in class that does not have a letter to open! Remember the current assignment was to either write about your family’s summer travel plans or about our recent Fine Arts night.

Next week’s in class European essay was introduced in class today. Students will have time the rest of this week to make sure that they have 10 facts in their geography binders about Bulgaria and Europe in general. They will also need to make sure that they have 10 facts from the research that was done in order to create their European games. These 20 facts will be used to write a compare and contrast essay about the cultures of Europe in class next week.
Students also worked on their 3rd penpal letter for their friends in Bulgaria. We have received 3 letters, so we hope to catch up by sending out our 3rd letters no later than this Friday.
HOMEWORK: Read over your 3rd letter to Bulgaria with a parent. Even if you did not yet finish it, edit the part that you have written for correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. Remember, your letter is a teaching tool for the ESL students, so you want for it to be correct! Forward it to me if you feel that it ready to go!

Students received their 3rd letter from Europe in class today and began writing responses. The focus for this response will either be our Fine Arts night or our travel plans for this summer. It will broaden the Bulgarians’ global awareness to know about the fine arts included in our curriculum. Our penpals have shared with us the many places in the world to which they have traveled so we might want to reciprocate with plans for our own travels.
Students also received a new map of Europe so that we can all become better oriented to the 44 different countries. Today we discovered that “S” is the most common letter for the beginning of the names of the European countries and located those 6 or 7 on our maps. We questioned whether or not San Marino should count as a separate country and why Scotland was not included in the list on our maps. Discuss these 2 questions with your family and share your information in class tomorrow please.
HOMEWORK: Enjoy Fine Arts night! Exactly 50% of you returned your signed Progress Reports. Taking care of this responsibility is easy homework points! Get these in tomorrow at the latest please!!

Students enjoyed the Planet Earth chapter entitled ‘Ice Worlds’ in class today. Many thanks to Marium for her yummy treat that we enjoyed during the video! Before the Planet Earth DVD, we all signed a letter for our ESL friends that will be included in an envelope full of Savannah Morning News articles on The Tall Ships. They will not have time to send us copies of a local Sofia newspaper, but perhaps some SCD students would like to find one online for us to view in class on Monday? See what you can find!
HOMEWORK: None unless you are missing assignments. Check our homework clipboard on Monday if you are not sure.

Ask your family what they think about the size of the United States as compared to the size of Europe. Share with them the graphic on the back of your European map that you worked on in class today to show them the answer. All of your vocab quizzes look very good. It was interesting how many of you put an “h” on the end of the term ‘savanna’ though! I guess old habits are hard to break!
HOMEWORK: None (Those of you who were absent for today’s quiz, be sure to review tonight so that you can make up this quiz tomorrow please).

All 34 penpals letters have been mailed to our friends in Bulgaria. A special thanks to those of you who have agreed to have 2 penpals each so that all Bulgarian students will receive our mail. We hope to print out and receive our 3rd letters from The American College of Sofia the day after tomorrow!
Geography students played their European board games one last time in class today after adding to their Bulgarian research notes. Hopefully the majority of the students have been able to play all eleven games, learning about eleven different countries.
HOMEWORK: Study for tomorrow’s vocab quiz. There will be four fill in the blank sentences of mine, then you will write your own sentence for each of the four new geography vocab terms. Be sure to include the location for your sentence about the international dateline. You will have new maps to work on after you finish the quiz in class tomorrow. Quiz terms: savanna, delta, pole, international dateline.

Students looked up the meanings of this week’s vocab in class today, adding definitions to their vocabulary sections of their geography binders. Students who had finished and corrected their 2nd Bulgarian letters were then given time to write their homework sentences while the remainder of the class caught up. Hopefully we will have our 3rd letters from our European penpals this Friday!
HOMEWORK: Please write complete sentences for each of the 4 new vocab words. Remember that your sentence must include the meaning of the word. So although “We sat and watched the sunset over the beautiful savanna” is a good sentence, it does not tell me the meaning of a savanna. We will share these in class tomorrow, so make yours creative!

Students shared their exciting adventure with their Bulgarian penpals in class today through letter writing. Only about half of the 30 Geography students involved in this project have sent their 2nd letter to the group at The American College of Sofia, so please get those to me as soon as possible!
HOMEWORK: Please send my your finished and proofread 2nd letter if you have not already done so. Remember, please, that the assignment was to inform your penpal about The Tall Ships that you saw yesterday. Send it to queen@savcds.org and I will forward it as an attachment. Hopefully you will get your 3rd letter next week!

The students switched places today; the folks who went to see the Tall Ships yesterday were in class today, the students who had not yet gone to River Street enjoyed their field trip today.
The rest of the students received their second penpal letter today and worked on a response. We will finish these in class tomorrow and continue with Planet Earth if time allows.
HOMEWORK: None for those of you who have all assignments in. We are still missing 10 “old homeworks”. Help us reduce this to zero by getting yours in! Email me if you are not sure if and what you are missing. Thanks! We can do it!

Students who were in class today watched a short slide show and video of the Tall Ship ‘Eagle’ which we hope to see on River Street tomorrow. Some students also received their first penpal letter from Bulgaria. Students were very impressed at the length and quality of the Bulgarian student’s writing and are motivated to respond with long letters themselves. We will use class time to write back to these European students in class on Thursday and Friday.
HOMEWORK: Please continue to bring in missing assignments. You do not have any new homework for tonight or tomorrow night due to the Tall Ships field trip.
