Grandmas’ Chocolate Cake: tough recipe but worth it!!!!!
Grandma Avalon’s Chocolate Cake Recipe

- Add salt to flour and sift (or mix with a fork); have ready on the side
- Put 1 t. vinegar in 1 c. milk and stir…will sour milk…set aside
- Grease two 8” cake pans…smear butter over inside surface thoroughly and sprinkle in flour….coat entire surface…this is important!!!!!!!) set aside
- Melt 2 squares of unsweetened chocolate…..maybe 3….set aside
- Cream butter…..use your mixing spoon….make creamy
- Add sugar gradually…..beat until creamy
- Add I egg, mix well…..until you can’t really see any egg
- Add 2nd egg, mix well…….
- Beat 2 minutes…..
- Add vanilla, flour, sour milk……blending slowly…. ADD VANILLA AND MIX; ADD FLOUR AND MIX; ADD MILK AND MIX
- Add melted chocolate and mix well
- Dissolve baking soda in the T. vinegar (it will foam a bit)
- Add to batter, mixing well
- Grease and flour cake pan (BEST TO DO THIS BEFORE STARTING….USE BUTTER AND COAT ENTIRE PAN….THEN SPRINKLE IN FLOUR UNTIL WHOLE SURFACE IS COATED….BE THOROUGH)
- Pour in batter
- Bake 25-30 minutes at 350 degrees…test with toothpick after 25 minutes….if pick comes up clean, it is done
Notes: we like cake a little more chocolatey, so we add a 3rd square of chocolate.
We bake in 8” pans so cake is thicker….bake a little longer, 35-40 minutes
When you make cake at home, you will pour batter into two pans
This recipe was given to me by my Grandma a long time ago……
