6th: With a couple of folks complete with their project, we are considering moving up the date of project due to Thursday. But don’t worry! If that doesn’t work, we could extend it again to Friday for you. Nice job again in working hard during class. Don’t forget to re-read the overview of the project to be sure you stay on the right track. (NOTE: The dichotomous key is a BRANCH CHART, not couplets of questions.)

6th HW: As assigned by you. Please get progress report signed, if you haven’t already.

7th: Survey for start of class today:

7th: Today, we reviewed the Pig Practicum answers to learn from our mistakes as well as determine where we worked well. Moving on to electricity, but first, a review of atomic structure…then static electricity. Still yet to determine the answer to the challenge: why does the balloon stick to the board?

7th HW: GET TEST SIGNED! Chocolate incentives!

6th: Six Kingdoms

Posted in Daily Posts and HW on April 16, 2012 by harrison

6th: Students began today by tackling the challenging task of learning about diversity of life. With a self-homework log, students will track daily their efforts to complete a research chart, develop another way to present the information, and provide a dichotomous key for all living organisms (in which kingdom do each belong?).

Helpful links for your research:

Reading packet for this unit (also good for research): Bacteria

7th: Today, many students learned the valuable lesson of how hard work pays off! We had three folks earn 100% – a stellar performance. Plus an additional 11 who earned an A. Hats off! For those who scored 75% or below, they had a chance to learn from their mistakes, make corrections using their own brain, and resubmit new answers for a total of 10 additional points. In this way, anyone taking a retest would only earn at highest an 85% after getting a second chance. In addition, the opportunity to learn from one’s own mistakes is quite the valuable lesson in itself.

7th HW: Please finish the atomic model worksheet from class. Many did not pick it up so here it is again:Atomic Structure review
For those who have their test returned, you are welcome to get a parent signature as that will be Wednesday’s homework.

6th and 7th: Happy Minimester!

6th: Today, we finished up three column notes and then discussed (via Venn diagramming) how viruses are not actually considered alive! Please review for the quiz tomorrow by reading over your three column notes, brushing up on vocabulary, and reviewing this study guide. NOTE: Remember that you should realize that archaebacteria and eubacteria do not have a center inside their cell, called a nucleus, whereas all other living organisms, the eukaryotes (you, me, animals, plants, fungi, and protists) DO have a nucleus.

6th HW: STUDY Study Guide for Classification Quiz 2012

7th: Stomachs were churning. No, literally. The fetal pigs had already churned things in their stomachs. We looked! And then one long “small” intestine was measured at 1.8 meters long! Please be sure to review and study hard your new terms. Please find the pig pics below to help you! Quiz on Monday on Pig Guides 1-3. Pig-Need-to-Know-Guides

LOOK AT HOW MANY ARE BEETLES!!!
6th: We had a fun challenge first to guess what percentage of named species include invertebrates, vertebrates, plants, and other! In order, respectively and roughly, it’s 76.8%, 3.6%, 18.9%, and 3.0%. Cool! So many invertebrates – spiders, scorpions, insects, molluscs, crustaceans, and corals. We finished with a first effort at three column notes. Please find the explanation here: three column notes directions
Study Guide for Friday quiz here: Study Guide for Classification Quiz 2012

6th HW: Please complete three column notes on the following section headings of your reading packet: Classifying Organisms, Linnaean system of classification, Modern Classification, and Difficulty Naming Species (p.46-50). If you don’t have your packet, here it is here – Classification of Living Things!
